The 26th edition of the Asian Athletics Championships kicked off on Tuesday. The continental showpiece, at Gumi, Republic of Korea, promises to offer some breathtaking action, with more than 2,000 athletes from 43 countries appearing at the event.
India has sent a 61-member team, notably missing ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. The championships will end on May 31.
With Neeraj absent, young guns Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh will lead India’s charge in the men’s javelin throw event at the Asian Championships. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem will be keen to continue his dominance after his historic triumph at the Paris Olympics 2024.
While finalising the Indian contingent for the Asian Championships, the selectors highly considered the Federation Cup in Kochi, in April. Several Olympians, Asian medalists and record-holders, including Avinash Sable (steeplechase), Praveen Chithravel (triple jump), Annu Rani (javelin throw) and Tejaswin Shankar (decathlon), will carry India’s hopes in Gumi.
